Review for Afternoon Tea only.
Service and F&B standards are severely wanting - especially for an Aman and their associated price point. I was recommended afternoon tea on the verandah.
I emailed to book days in advance and the reply was that someone from Amangalla would contact me. Never happened. So I chased and was then advised to call. I ended up making a booking in person once I arrived in Galle Fort
The verandah is next to a fairly busy road which is no fault of the property but does not make for a very calm experience. I asked to move inside.
The tea is not cheap at close to LKR10,000 per person. The finger sandwiches were parsimoniously filled and had definitely been sitting out for a while as the bread was stale at the edges. The two little short eats were fine. The cakes were cloying to the point of being inedible. The photo shows what I left uneaten, ie most of the tea.
I'd say the only redeeming item were the scones and their accompanying strawberry jam (with whole strawberries) and proper clotted cream
The service is passable (by Sri Lankan standards) with the female staff having a markedly better attitude than the male staff overall - as an example, after looking around a seeing severs standing about and not looking at any guests in particular, I tried to get the attention of a male server and he literally waved his hand at me as if to say "I'll get back to you"... then didn't.
Disappointing.
An unforgettable stay in a wonderful country full of friendly, kind and warm people. The hotel is steeped in rich history, the service is consistent and considerate, the experiences are sincere and endearing and facilities fantastic. It was only during our last dinner that we found out it was ranked in top 50 hotels, which made complete sense. A luxury offering rare value.
Very poor food taste and outrageous treatment to locals. Will not be back.
Got the feeling that they didn’t welcome locals from the beginning. It’s sad as srilankans treating each other so. It’s a beautiful building and well maintained though.
Asked for a cling wrap to cover the high chair table and the first response was they didn’t have it. Then when asked the second time, cling wrap appears. Thanks for that though. However, I don’t recommend this place to locals!
As we walked up the steps to the veranda and the hotels entrance, two staff members greeted us very lukewarmly. Then one girl came running with the a la carte menu to check even before we were seated, may be thinking that we will change our minds after seeing the price tag.
She also said we can be seated outside tables but not inside as they were “set for dinner” at 4pm. When my husband them again because we had a baby, the girl said that it’s impossible.
It seemed an inconvenience for them to host us. There were so many waiters idling around but it looked as if it was very tiresome to wait on customers, how terrible of them to descend on a hospitality establishment outside of the conventional meal times seemed to be the thought coursing around their heads.
But sadly, this can not be pinned down to the attitude of the staff alone. It seems to stem from the service ethos of the establishment, which I feel is not welcoming to “locals” and possibly discouraging to guests who are not resident at the hotel. You are a huge disappointment, Amangalla.
We will never be back!
Came here for dinner. The service was excellent but the food was so so. I went for the seafood platter and my partner the risotto. Given the price I was expecting top quality, but the calamari was over done and the octopus was too chewy to eat, although, i will say the seabass was perfectly done. My partners meal was nice enough, but again not great. Overall i would say it left a bit to be desired. Wouldn't recommend to be honest, there's much nicer food to be had at a much cheaper price within old fort area.
Located at the C position in the ancient city of Galle, you can walk to the lighthouse, the church and the barefoot that you must visit within two steps. The hotel's welcome ceremony was very pleasantly surprised, leaving a little suspense. …
Didn't stay here, but stopped by for a snack. Lovely location and staff. Very peaceful and beautiful renovation of an old building
Everywhere is scenery 🍃In the hotel in the castle, considerate service, check-in and lighting, personal butler to visit the hotel, afternoon tea, parting gift, rich breakfast, even if you don’t have time for yoga and spa, you can enjoy every moment in Amman!Small suggestion: the bed can be changed to make it more comfortable! …
One of the most beautiful Aman properties and possibly the grand dame of the Galle fort. The building is a gorgeous work of Dutch architecture. The service, food and rooms are impeccable and amenities live up the Aman standard. Spellbinding
